Cheongsam in old photoThe Cheongsam, also known as Qipao (pronounced Chi-pow), is probably the most common kind of Asian dress that comes to mind when we think of an Oriental or Chinese dress.

The Cheongsam is a traditional dress worn by Chinese women, typified by a high collar, long length (mid-calf usually) and button or frog closures near the shoulder. This fitted dress is often made up in shimmering silk, embroidered satin or other sensual fabrics.

Modern Cheongsams now come in various lengths, styles and patterns, and worn by women all over the world. A Chinese dress is now an acceptable alternative to the little black dress for special occasions. It can even be worn in the office at work.
